Colourization is, simply put, the art of adding colour to black and white photos. Black and white photos were the only option in the 18th and for many years 19th century. In the 1960's and seventies colour photography became available at an affordable price. The public loved this and photography took off massively. The advent of cheap plastic cameras and new colour film that meant people could make snapshots of their everyday lives to share and preserve. The 'kodak moment' was born.
Colour is how we see everyday life and these new colour photos became instantly more relatable. They showed life as it was. Bright, vibrant and colourful. Not as some artistic abstract dark monotoned world. Black and white photography instantly took a back seat to this new realism in photos. It became the sole preserve of artistic photography and newspapers (who were yet to introduce colour to their daily press).
Now we can add that realism and vibrancy to your old black and white photos. We can breath new life into something that can look very distant and unrelatable. By adding colour to old black and white family photos, they become real people who wore real colourful clothes. The photos represent people as we remembered them. We can bring back those memories and keep them alive for years to come.
An historical photo that really comes to life once the colour is added. The person becomes more familiar and the details come to life as the colour pops out to reveal medals and braiding galore.
Adding colour to black and white photos is still an art even in this modern digital era. Back in the day. Colour was add to black and white photos by hand. Special photographic dyes were used to wash over the areas that were to be coloured. The results varied though. Some of these were done very painstakingly over many hours. Some were done by skilled artists and other were done by the photographer who was perhaps better with a camera than a brush. There was also a risk to the original photo. The inks that were used were permanent and if a mistake was made by the painter. It was permanent! Alterations couldn't be made and if the colour didn't look the way it should then it couldn't be changed later. This was all fine for the most part, as this was the only option. Some colour was better than none, was the mantra of the day.
This situation lasted all the way up to the end of the last millenium. Then the digital age was born and technology has meant that this process is much improved. The results are more realistic. The contrast and density of the colours are now able to be controlled and the final results are amazing. The risk of damage to the original photo has now been eliminated. Changing colours and adjustments and alterations are now possible. It is all a much better and brighter and more colourful future for those all black and white photos.
The process is still very much a manual process. Painting on a screen in much the same way as you would paint with a brush on canvas. We use the very latest in digital touch and pen technology to produce amazing colour effects. These can really bring life and vibrancy to your precious photos. We use the latest software from Adobe, Photoshop CC along with Wacom Graphic tablet and digital pen.
